The colorization happens through a coating mechanism that uses techniques from the automotive and manufacturing industry, called X2 Coating Technology. Their highly-guarded secret results in a high-gloss well designed iPhone model that is colored to your specifications. You can choose the coloring for 5 main components: back panel, bottom back panel, the frame, the main button and the logo (on the back). You can also colorized your earbuds and docking station.
Apple's iPhone was one of the biggest product launches in history with people camping out the night before the release date and fighting for access to an iPhone even before the first reviews had come out. Now that the iPhone has entered seamlessly into our consciousness the importance of making yours your own becomes higher.
ColorWare has been in business since 2000, taking existing products and colorizing them to the owner's specifications. They started with the gaming industry and now cover all of the latest generation consoles, all Apple products (including Macbooks and iPods), mp3 players and Dell and IBM laptops and desktops.

I think this product (or something similar) will be very popular; part of the reason people want the iPhone so badly is as a way to define their identity. But there's a problem. It only comes in one color! Solution: skinning. Be original by being slightly different than everyone else.

I guarantee next-gen iPhones will come in multiple colors perhaps making this product obsolete.
